This specialty deals with the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, including infections of the sinuses, heart, brain, lungs, urinary tract, bowel, bones and pelvic organs. These infections may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. In addition, some infectious disease specialists treat patients with infections due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS.
An infectious disease specialist requires at least nine years of education and training to become board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with a subspecialty in infectious diseases. This education includes four years of medical school and a three-year residency in internal medicine, followed by two-to-three years of additional training in infectious diseases.
