Hepatology

This branch of medicine focuses on the management and disorders of the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas. It is a subspecialty of gastroenterology. The scope of this specialty includes jaundice, hepatitis, infections of the liver, hepatitis, pancreatitis, cirrhosis of the liver and cancer of the above organs.

A hepatologist requires 11 years of education and training to become board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with a subspecialty in hepatology. This education includes four years of medical school and a three-year residency in internal medicine, followed by three years of training in gastroenterology and an additional year of training in hepatology.
