Anesthesiology

This practice of medicine is dedicated to the relief of pain and care of the surgical patient before, during and after surgery. Anesthesiologists administer anesthetics to surgical patients in the operating room, throughout the duration of the surgery. They provide continual medical assessment, monitor the patient’s vital signs and control the patient’s level of pain and unconsciousness. Following surgery, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient until he or she can be moved out of the recovery room.

Anesthesiologists also provide pain management for cancer patients, childbirth pain and other chronic or acute pain conditions in non-surgical patients.

An anesthesiologist requires eight years of education and training to become board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. This education includes four years of medical school, a one-year internship and three years of residency.
